Myopia control with MiYOSMART spectacle lenses
Scartho eyecare are one of the first Opticians within the area to be accredited to dispense Hoya’s MiYOSMART Myopia control spectacle lenses.
But why is controlling Myopia important??
Being myopic is not just about having to wear spectacles to see, myopia, particularly high myopia increases the risk of pathologic ocular changes with the potential to cause permanent vision loss such as cataract, glaucoma, retinal detachment and myopic maculopathy. Current projections suggest that, again by 2050, myopia will become a leading cause of permanent blindness worldwide!
So, although Myopia control is a relatively new field of expertise within Optics, at Scartho eyecare we believe that there is now enough evidence to show that preventing a child from becoming more Myopic, or at least slowing the progression of Myopia down is a clinically sound thing to offer to our younger patients.
Miyosmart lenses
At Scartho Eyecare, we have been using Myopia control contact lenses for some time now and our results are very positive, for a spectacle lens solution we are using Hoya’s MiyoSmart lenses. This spectacle lens is based on revolutionary Defocus Incorporated Multiple Segments (D.I.M.S.) Technology (as image above shows) This was developed in collaboration with The Hong Kong Polytechnic University in 2014. MiYOSMART spectacle lenses are easy to fit and look just like a regular single vision lens.
In 2018, MiYOSMART spectacle lenses won the Gold Prize, Grand Award & Special Gold Award International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva, Switzerland. In 2020, they also won the Silmo d’Or Award in the Vision category at the Silmo Paris Optical Fair.
With the exclusive non-invasive D.I.M.S. Technology, the lens provides a full vision correction and has a ring shaped treatment zone to slow down myopia progression. The combination of the focus zone and treatment zone provides clear vision and manages myopia simultaneously.
