What is Meibomian gland dysfunction??

Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) is a common eye condition that affects the oil-producing glands in the eyelids. These glands, called Meibomian glands, secrete a lipid-rich oil that helps to lubricate and protect the surface of the eye. When the Meibomian glands become blocked or malfunction, the oil they produce can't reach the surface of the eye, leading to dryness, irritation, and other symptoms.

Symptoms of MGD include:

-dry, gritty, or burning eyes

-blurred vision

-sensitivity to light

-redness of the eyes

-a feeling of something in the eyes

-tear film instability

-watery eyes

The exact causes of MGD are not known, but it is believed to be related to a combination of factors, including genetics, environmental factors, and lifestyle factors. Some common risk factors for MGD include age, hormonal changes, and certain medical conditions such as diabetes and rosacea.

There are several treatments available for MGD, including lifestyle changes, over-the-counter eye drops, and prescription medications. Lifestyle changes such as avoiding dry, windy environments, using a humidifier, and taking regular breaks from computer and other digital screens can help to alleviate symptoms. Over-the-counter eye drops can provide temporary relief, but they don't address the underlying cause of the problem. Treatments such as warm compresses, and eyelid scrubs may be necessary to help resolve the underlying condition.

In addition, at Scartho eyecare, we recommend the Espansione My-Mask Therapy to unclog the Meibomian glands and can be effective in managing MGD.

It is important to consult an eye care professional if you suspect you have MGD, as it can lead to more serious complications if left untreated. With proper diagnosis and treatment, most people with MGD can find relief from symptoms and protect their vision.
